A fine pair of early 19th century French empire grey-painted and parcel gilt side chairs. Circa 1800, each with a rectangular back and seat with moulded frames, the top-rail and front-rail each centred by a patera and olive branches on square section legs with shaped feet. These chairs relate to the work of the two foremost chair makers of the Empire period, Jacob-Desmalter and P.B Marcion. They shared a huge imperial commission which included orders from the palaces of Compiegne, Saint-Cloud, Fontenebleau, Bagatelle and Tuileries. The patern of the front leg is reminiscent of certain X-shaped stools by Jacob-Desmalter.
